Go-To songs for a breakup.

Friday, November 06, 2015

So, when we're going through something with our partners, we naturally gravitate to sadder songs. I've complied a go-to list for time just like this. Take a look (in no order).

1. U Got It Bad by Usher.

"You know you got it bad when you're stuck in the house

You don't wanna have funIt's all you think about

U got it bad when you're out with someone

But you keep on thinkin' bout somebody elseU got it bad"

I had this song on repeat for like 2 days straight when my ex and I broke up(after I finished going crazy trying to fight him), I looked like a little puppy. I love this song regardless but it just came in handy then.

2. Irreplaceable by Beyonce

"You must not know 'bout me
You must not know 'bout me
I can have another you by tomorrow
So don't you ever for a second get to thinking you're irreplaceable
So go ahead and get gone
And call up that chick and see if she's home
Oops, I bet ya thought that I didn't know
What did you think I was putting you out for?"
So, this is around the time where I'm saying to myself "He can go 'head with her, I don't care. She not better than me" and I go all Taraji P. Henson on him in my head. Queen Bey has a go-to song for just about every emotion you could possibly go through, so let us hail the Queen for this track.

3. Ex-Factor by Lauryn Hill
"It could all be so simple
But you'd rather make it hard
Loving you is like a battle
And we both end up with scars
Tell me, who I have to be
To get some reciprocity
No one loves you more than me
And no one ever will"
Who better to consult for heartbreak than the Queen of R&B herself? When you can't figure out what it is that maybe you've done so wrong to cause him to be a jerk, that's where this hit track comes in. Make sure you have some ice cream before listen.

4. F(orget) You by Cee Lo Green
I see you driving 'round town
With the girl I love and I'm like,
Forget you!
Oo, oo, ooo
I guess the change in my pocket
Wasn't enough I'm like,
Forget you!
And forget her too!
Said, if I was richer, I'd still be with ya
Ha, now ain't that some sh? (ain't that some sh?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still wish you the best with a...
Forget you!
Need I explain this? Cee Lo kindly narrowed it down to two simple words.

5. Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
"He left no time to regret
Kept his lips wet
With his same old safe bet
Me and my head high
And my tears dry
Get on without my guy
You went back to what you knew
So far removed from all that we went through
And I tread a troubled track
My odds are stacked
I'll go back to black"
This late beauty provided nothing less than pure poetry, no matter what the subject was. Back to Black is one of my favorite songs by the powerhouse, depicting that he left so quickly that his lips were still wet from their last kiss. Despite her guy leaving, she'll hold her head high and move on with her life. Perfect for an unexpected ending of a relationships.

6. So Sick by Ne-Yo
"Gotta change my answering machine
Now that I'm alone
Cause right now it says that we
Can't come to the phone
And I know it makes no sense
Cause you walked out the door
But it's the only way I hear your voice anymore
(it's ridiculous)"
Now, don't act like y'all can't relate to this. I kept voice messages, texts, screenshots, videos, all of that for months after the breakup because I wasn't ready to face what everything really was. It can be so hard accepting the fact that you've lost someone you care so much about and Ne-Yo clearly understands.

7. Chasing Pavements by Adele
"Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere,
Or would it be a waste?
Even If I knew my place should I leave it there?
Should I give up,
Or should I just keep chasing pavements?
Even if it leads nowhere"
I apply this to that moment where there's a moment of opportunity to revive your relationship and you have to decide whether you're comfortable with being in a bad place with someone, or if you're tired and are ready to find what you deserve.

8. Cry Me a River by Justin
Timberlake
"You told me you loved me
Why did you leave me, all alone
Now you tell me you need me
When you call me, on the phone
Girl I refuse, you must have me confused
With some other guy
Your bridges were burned, and now it's your turn
To cry, cry me a river
Cry me a river-er
Cry me a river

Cry me a river-er, yea yea"
You poured your heart out and gave them your all, you thought they loved you back but they betray you, then have the nerve to need you again after crushing your heart? I think not. JT tells you exactly what you need to tell that certain someone and remind them that they lucked up and lost out, no your problem.

9. Grenade by Bruno Mars

"What you don't understand is
I'd catch a grenade for ya
Throw my hand on a blade for ya
I'd jump in front of a train for ya
You know I'd do anything for ya
oh oh oh oh oh
I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight right through my brain
Yes, I would die for you, baby
But you won't do the same"
I've loved this song since day one. There's no way this song was random, the lyrics he expressed in this song were so tightly packed with emotion, even if you were just listening for the heck of it, you'd feel the pain. He expresses the great lengths he would go to for his love, knowing she'd never do the same.

10. Circle by Marques Houston
"They say
if you love something let it go
and if it comes back then that's how you know
I got to the stop light then I made 4 rights
now I'm back where I started
and you're back in my life.

The further I go the closer I get back to you
I say I moved on till I'm reminded of you
can somebody help me
help me get out of this circle
get out of this circle?"
I think Marques Houston's older work is slept on, among other artists who careers ended up falling off the map. I like the fact that he explain that no matter what he does, it seems like he just can't seem to get away from an old lover.

Don't know if this helps but I hope it does!
This isn't goodbye, this is see you later, until next time!
