Unity in the Community: I am a roleMODEL

Friday, January 08, 2016

Needless to say, there's not much positivity in our world today, especially for our youth. With that being the case, if you follow me on social media, you know that I'm all for spreading a positive message and uplifting others and things of this nature, so imagine the overwhelming joy I felt when coming across one of (if not the biggest) the biggest youth organizations in Philly! Who am I speaking of? None other than the amazing RoleMODELS!

Initially, I believed this group to be just another group of young models/dancers, trying to make it, but in scrolling through their Instagram page, I learned they were so much more than that. This organization assists individuals as young as 4 years old, to the age of 24 to find their inner beauty and to use it and channel it in the best way possible, through two very popular activities: Modeling and Dancing.

I noticed the personal interest that is taken in each young one through out this large family of people, each one coming from their own walks of life, varying in backgrounds, yet all coming together to share each others positive energy. I love that roleMODELS make sure they keep at the forefront their mission to help others with self-confidence, public speaking and ones self-esteem.

Another aspect, and probably my favorite, of this organization is their "Girl Talk/Boy Talk" (which you can also catch a glimpse of on their webisodes now on YouTube), where individuals are allowed to freely express themselves about the things happening around them, there they also are spoken to about dealing with peer pressure, having a positive body image, also emphasizing on self-worth and things like this.

This program allows our youth to be actively involved in an extra-curricular activity and off of the streets of Philadelphia and while having fun, they are able to still assist with both personal and professional development. IAmAroleMODEL have gained the support of not only on lookers, but also councilwomen and Philadelphia musicians. Participants are encourage to excel in academics, as well as more involvement in civic and social activities in their schools and communities.

RoleMODELS not only encourage participants to independently to engage more with their communities, but they as a whole do the same thing as well. The do this by collaborating with our organizations and helping or giving back to the communities, a few examples of them doing this were: Feeding the Community, Warm coat Give-Away, HIV Awareness Event, Clean-up Day at Wilson, just to name a few. With these events, it teaches others compassion for those who may be less fortunate, who may have run into some bad luck and it helps to take pride in our community.

Did I mention that there is a mentoring group by way of the RoleMODELS "Big Sister/Big Brother" program? I think such a program is a beautiful thing, especially for those who do not have any one to look up to and talk to on a more personal basis.

"RoleMODELS seek to capture all age groups, so that no child is left out or has a feeling of not being a part of something. By bringing youth of all ages together, from different areas, this program show that it doesn't matter  where you're from, or how old you are when placed in  a safe and nurturing environment with structure... everyone can get along and work to help each other a a team."

I personally would like to thank RoleMODELS for keep our kids off the streets and out of trouble, if anyone has been looking to find a positive organization to join, an after school activity, looking to build you confidence, please please please by all means reach out to them! One of the best choices a teenager or kid growing up in Philly can make.

Also, be sure to check out their new web-series (click the link to get to that page), I was amused and also respected the rawness and honesty of it all!

Bottom line, if you haven't heard of them or checked them out, I suggest you do that ASAP!

This isn't goodbye, it's see you later, until next time!
